Entering & Leaving Portsmouth
Vessels under 20m inbound for Gunwharf Quays must use the Small Boat Channel in Portsmouth Harbour and cross the deep-water channel at Ballast Buoy. All vessels must contact the Queen's Harbour Master (QHM) on VHF Ch11 for permission to cross the deep-water channel.
The 50m wide Small Boat Channel runs from the west of No4 Bar Buoy to the west of Ballast Buoy. There is a flashing leading light on the south end of Oil Fuel Jetty (OFJ) and the red sector of this light conforms to the boat channel. Vessels must proceed to Ballast Pile and then cross the main navigation channel at right angles when it is clear. It is mandatory to run an engine, if fitted, whilst transiting the entrance.
Vessels over 20m in length have to enter and leave Portsmouth Harbour in the main channel, and must have permission from QHM.
Vessels over 48m in length must have a pilot boat to enter & leave Portsmouth Harbour.
Vessels must not loiter in the area outside the Gunwharf Quays entrance as this interferes with the Isle of Wight ferry movements and can be dangerous.
Tides in the harbour entrance run very strongly in the third and fourth hours of the ebb and again during the last two hours of flood. There may be standing waves at the entrance and conditions can become confused in southerly winds particularly at times of frequent ship movements. Winds eddy round Fort Blockhouse and frequently turn through 180º. Vessels entering in windy conditions are advised to drop sails before transiting through the entrance.
QHM controls shipping on VHF Ch11.
All vessels are required to contact QHM before slipping Gunwharf Quays.
