Gunwharf Quays shopping centre shows shoppers how ‘small changes make big differences' when it comes to reducing environmental impacts

Gunwharf Quays, one of Land Securities seven largest shopping centres, is encouraging customers to change their habits and become a little more green by hosting a ‘tip tree’ exhibition.

Starting 12th April 2010, the focus of the 12 day exhibition is a 3m tree shaped stand full of practical hints and tips that can help make people aware of how a small change in their habits can make a big difference in reducing total environmental impacts.

The thirteen environmental tips and facts include themes on food wastage, water savings, energy reduction and recycling. The idea of the ‘tip tree’ is to raise awareness of the extent of some of society’s impacts and also what we can do as individuals to help bring about reductions.

Sarah Beattie, Environment Manager for Land Securities’ Retail portfolio, commented on the project: “Land Securities has set a target to raise awareness amongst its shoppers on environmental issues by 10%. Changing behaviours is one of the biggest drivers in addressing environmental issues as it is often easy to implement and obviously has a huge impact if everyone gets involved.”

Peter Emery Centre Director at Gunwharf Quays added: “We are always looking to provide a good experience for visitors to our centres and its not just about shopping. We want our customers to have access to information that is relevant to their lives and that helps to make our community a better place to live. This exhibition is a practical way to help everyone understand more about the environment.”

The ‘tip tree’ exhibition for customers follows the centre being named ‘National Retailer Recycler of the Year 2009 and the launch of Land Securities’ Retailer sustainability guide “Retail needn’t cost the earth”, which outlines practical things that retailers can do to make their business more environmentally friendly and often save them money at the same time.

The stand was designed by 442 Design in Edinburgh using environmentally friendly products.
