The Vernon Monument
This historic site now occupied by the popular shopping and residential complex of Gunwharf Quays was associated with naval and military explosives and weaponry for over four hundred years. As HMS VERNON, it was a specialist training establishment and home base for many small ships, especially the ‘Ton’ class mine-countermeasures vessels of the last century. HMS VERNON played a crucial role as the Royal Navy’s world-leading centre for naval training, including many service personnel from our allied navies, for almost sixty years, until the site was sold for commercial redevelopment in 1996. Yet few visitors today are aware of the site’s historic significance.
