Gunwharf Quays has started work on a major revamp of Marlborough Square, the next step in its ongoing upgrade of the popular waterfront outlet.

Following the recent improvements to The Avenues, the new phase is now underway and is expected to wrap up by spring 2026. The changes include refreshed shopfronts, new landscaping, more seating, and brand-new, larger guest washrooms - all designed to improve the overall visitor experience.

The project also includes the addition of new retail space, with big-name brands like Cornish Bakery, Crew Clothing and M&S taking up larger units. M&S will stay open while the works are carried out.

The makeover comes after a standout year for Gunwharf Quays. In 2024, it recorded its highest-ever annual sales, saw record visitor numbers, and enjoyed its best trading week during Black Friday. Nearly a third of stores hit personal bests, and new names like Russell & Bromley and Giggling Squid joined the line-up.

Yvonne Clay, Centre Director, said: “We’re excited to begin this next phase of our investment at Gunwharf Quays. The Marlborough Square enhancement works will build on the success of recent works and support the centre’s continued strong performance. From enhancing the aesthetics to improving amenities, everything has been designed with our guests and brand partners in mind as we create a more attractive, enjoyable and sustainable destination for years to come.”

Sustainability is also a big part of the plan. Earlier this year, over 1,200 solar panels were added to the site, generating enough electricity to power 135 homes and cutting carbon emissions by around 115 tonnes a year.
